The Science Behind Barlings Woodworks
January 5, 2024In this FAQ-style introduction, we’ll walk you through the process of setting up your posts, ensuring they’re properly aligned and securely anchored for a fence that stands the test of time.
1. How do I Set the Height of the String Line for my Posts?
Setting the height of the string line correctly is essential for ensuring uniformity in your fence. Align the string line with the highest point on the face of the post and adjust it accordingly. This ensures that all posts will be installed at the same height, resulting in a visually pleasing and structurally sound fence.
2. What’s the Process for Installing the First Post?
Once you’ve set the height of your first post to the string line, ensure it’s level in both directions. Fill the hole with concrete or slurry mix, leaving approximately 75mm of space from ground level. Then, fill the remainder of the hole with soil, pressing firmly to stabilize the post. Adding a layer of soil around the top helps further stabilize the post while the concrete sets.
3. Should I Brace the Start Post?
Yes, it’s highly recommended to brace the start post to prevent any movement during the installation of rails. Securing the start post with a scrap piece of timber or star picket will keep it in place and maintain its level throughout the installation process. Failure to brace the start post may result in misalignment when installing rails, compromising the overall integrity of the fence.
4. What’s the Recommended Depth for Digging Post Holes?
Dig the post holes 50mm deeper than the depth of the post itself. This additional depth allows for the proper packing of a dry mix of concrete or a slurry mix to achieve the required height to match the string line. For end and corner posts, it’s advisable to concrete them in to provide extra stability and anchor the fence securely.
